Over this past weekend, I coordinated my first Indian-American Wedding at a venue in Northern Virginia. The groom was from a Hindu background and the bride was from a Christian based family. Seeing the families come together to celebrate the amazing couple was wonderful. I learned a lot about the Indian Culture and their traditions that go back centuries. Although, they are very different from American traditional weddings it was very fun to see how much they reenact what their ancestors once did. The wedding started off with a Baharat, which is where the groom arrives to the bride’s family on a horse and the bride’s family will tease the groom and take his shoes. Once the ceremony started, I looked around the room and although the priest was not speaking English, everyone was in such awe over the beautiful culture that brought here. There was a language barrier between the families but, that did not stop them from celebrating together and becoming one big family. Communication can be more than just verbal. Dancing and non-verbal gestures were going all around this room. I think it is very interesting how we do not need to speak the same language or know someone’s culture to know communicate with another individual.
